'No white socks?': School sends out wildly restrictive dress code leaving commenters confused

Have you ever attended somewhere with a super strict dress code?

I have. I went to a school with a mandatory uniform when I was a kid, and I hated it more than almost anything else in the world. And so did the kid in this story, which was shared to the MildlyInfuriating subreddit. Everything we were allowed to wear was defined to the last detail. There was a certain skirt, a certain blazer, certain socks, and certain shoes. But instead of evening the playing field, as uniforms are supposed to do, it only made the small details stand out even more. We would notice who had patent leather shoes and who had boat shoes. We'd compare the lengths of our skirts within centimeters, even though they were all supposed to be knee-length. And we would compete over who had the cutest hair accessory, even though none of them were supposed to be attracting attention. It was a pretty rough entry into adult dressing. Clothes are incredibly important. They're often the first thing that people notice about us. They set the tone for our personalities, even when we don't mean them to. So when you take that avenue of expression away from kids, it's bound to crop up in other places. The school in this story went above and beyond to make sure its students were adhering to a certain standard. It was so over-the-top that commenters had a hard time parsing what it meant. Nothing is more annoying than contradictory instructions. It's never a great idea to be vague when you're trying to get people to follow rules. Rules, if meant to be followed, should be easy to follow. The dress code in this story was certainly not. Students, parents, and commenters were left wondering what was actually allowed to be worn, since it seemed like everything was off the table.   • PSUAth Looks like a private catholic college, in the Philippines. But I lived in SC near Bob Jones University. They had a similar dress code. Plus a code of conduct. They couldn't watch certain movies above some rating. TV shows were limited. They had campus curfews.
